Don't Just Say You're Good. Show the Work.
Your portfolio is evidence of what you can do. It doesn't need to contain everything you've ever created. It needs to help the right person understand your skills quickly.
Your Portfolio Is Proof — Not Decoration.
A portfolio is a selected collection of work that helps someone understand what you can currently do. Depending on your creative field, that evidence might be photographs, videos, recordings, designs, writing, performances, projects or documented results.
Choose Your Portfolio Situation.
Don't build randomly. Start from your actual problem.
Choose Your Situation
Your portfolio roadmap will appear here.
I Don't Have a Portfolio Yet.
That's okay. Don't begin by designing a fancy portfolio. First create something worth putting inside it.
CHOOSE ONE SKILL
Decide what ability you want the portfolio to demonstrate first.
CREATE A SMALL PROJECT
Give yourself a realistic project you can actually complete.
FINISH IT
A completed simple project is more useful than ten unfinished ambitious ideas.
REVIEW IT
Look at what worked and what still needs improvement.
CREATE AGAIN
Your next piece should apply something you learned from the previous one.
SELECT THE BEST
Your strongest completed work becomes the beginning of your portfolio.
I Have Lots of Work. What Should I Include?
A portfolio is curated. More work does not automatically make it stronger.
RELEVANT: Does this piece relate to the work or opportunity I'm pursuing?
STRONG: Does it represent my current ability well?
CLEAR: Can someone understand what I contributed?
FINISHED: Does it look complete enough to represent me?
USEFUL: Does it add something important that the other pieces don't already show?
What Counts as Portfolio Work?
The answer changes depending on what you do. Your portfolio format should make sense for your craft.
MUSIC & SINGING
Strong recordings, performance clips, original work or relevant musical projects.
DANCE
Clear performance footage, choreography examples or documented productions.
ACTING
Suitable scenes, performance clips, production work or other relevant acting material.
PHOTOGRAPHY
A carefully selected collection of images demonstrating your strongest relevant work.
VIDEO & FILM
Finished films, scenes, reels or project samples that clearly show your contribution.
WRITING
Selected writing samples appropriate to the kind of writing you want to pursue.
ART & DESIGN
Selected finished visual work, designs or relevant project examples.
CONTENT CREATION
Strong content examples, campaigns, series or projects demonstrating your abilities.
DJ & PRODUCTION
Mixes, productions, recordings or completed music projects.
How Should I Organise My Portfolio?
Make it easy for someone unfamiliar with you to understand what they're looking at.
Don't hide your strongest relevant work behind weaker examples.
Adjust what you show depending on who will see the portfolio.
For collaborative work, make your contribution clear.
Check links, files, playback and basic navigation before sharing.
Titles and short context can help people understand each piece.
Remove older work when newer work represents you better.
My Portfolio Isn't Strong Enough Yet.
Then don't waste all your energy redesigning the portfolio. Improve the work inside it.
What would make my next piece noticeably better than my current best piece?
That answer gives you a much more useful practice target than simply saying “I need a better portfolio.”
Before You Send Your Portfolio...
Give it one final check from the perspective of someone seeing your work for the first time.
My strongest relevant work is easy to find.
Everything I'm sharing opens and works correctly.
My contribution to collaborative work is clear.
I removed obvious weak or unnecessary pieces.
The portfolio makes sense for this opportunity.
My basic contact information is appropriate and accurate.
You Can Build Evidence Before Your First Client.
A beginner portfolio doesn't have to wait for someone to give you permission to create.
SELF-DIRECTED PROJECT
Give yourself a realistic creative brief and complete it properly.
COLLABORATION
Work with suitable creatives on a clearly defined small project.
REMAKE AN OLD IDEA
Revisit one of your earlier projects using what you know now.
SOLVE A CREATIVE PROBLEM
Create something around a specific communication or creative challenge.
Your Portfolio Is Not Your Storage Folder.
Everything You've Ever Made
Experiments, old projects, weak work, unfinished ideas and pieces you have outgrown can remain part of your personal archive.
The Work You Choose to Represent You
Relevant, strong and understandable examples selected for the people or opportunities you want to reach.
Your Portfolio Should Grow With You.
Make real work.
Complete the project.
Judge what worked.
Keep the strongest evidence.
Use it appropriately.
Upgrade it as your work improves.
Where Are You Taking It?
Building the portfolio is not the end. Choose what you're trying to do next.
