Opportunities Are Great. Being Ready Is Better.
Find out what to prepare, how to approach auditions and gigs, what to check before saying yes, and what to do if you are not ready yet.
An Opportunity Cannot Replace Preparation.
Auditions and gigs can give you experience, exposure, professional contacts and portfolio material. But first, understand what you can offer and what the opportunity actually requires.
Which One Sounds Like You?
Choose one. We'll show you the most useful next move.
Choose Your Situation
Your audition or gig roadmap will appear here.
I Want Auditions & Gigs.
Don't apply to everything simply because it says “opportunity.” First check whether your skill, experience and availability match what is being requested.
READ THE REQUIREMENTS
Check the requested skill, role, location, dates and application instructions.
CHECK THE ORGANISER
Know who is behind the opportunity and verify important information before committing.
PREPARE WHAT THEY ASKED FOR
Follow the application instructions instead of sending unrelated material.
TRACK YOUR APPLICATIONS
Keep basic notes on what you applied for, when you applied and what was requested.
I Have an Audition Coming.
Your goal is not to demonstrate every skill you have. Your goal is to understand the brief and prepare appropriately for that particular opportunity.
I know exactly what role or skill is being assessed.
I have read the instructions carefully.
I have prepared the requested material.
I have practised without depending completely on prompts or notes.
I know the date, time, location or online procedure.
I have checked what I need to bring or submit.
Am I Actually Ready?
You don't need to be perfect. But you should be able to demonstrate enough of the required skill to make applying meaningful.
CAN YOU DO IT?
Can you demonstrate the basic skill being requested?
CAN YOU REPEAT IT?
Can you perform reasonably consistently, rather than succeeding only once by accident?
CAN YOU SHOW IT?
Do you have suitable material or a way to demonstrate your current ability if requested?
CAN YOU FOLLOW A BRIEF?
Can you understand instructions and adapt your work to what the opportunity requires?
Someone Offered Me a Gig.
Great — but “we want you” is only the beginning of the conversation. Get the important details clear before you commit.
WHAT?
What exactly are you expected to do?
WHERE?
Where will the work happen?
WHEN?
Dates, reporting time, duration and deadlines.
TERMS?
Understand payment or other agreed arrangements.
USAGE?
Ask how recordings, images or creative work may be used where relevant.
AGREEMENT?
Important expectations should be clear before the work begins.
Pressure to decide immediately, unclear organisers, unexplained fees, requests for inappropriate personal information or major changes to the original arrangement are reasons to stop and verify before proceeding.
I Didn't Get the Opportunity.
Not being selected does not automatically tell you exactly why. Treat the result as one piece of information, not a complete measurement of your talent.
Was I actually suitable for the brief?
What part of my preparation worked well?
Where did I struggle?
Did I follow the instructions properly?
What should I improve before the next opportunity?
I Need Experience Before Bigger Gigs.
Good instinct. You don't have to wait for a major opportunity before creating evidence that you can work.
Create a small complete personal project.
Collaborate on a suitable small project.
Practise delivering your work to a brief.
Save strong examples of completed work.
Use that evidence when approaching larger opportunities.
Don't Stop at “Casting Call!”
Before getting excited, extract the information that actually matters.
Exciting Doesn't Automatically Mean Genuine.
Verify important details before sharing information, travelling, paying money or committing to an arrangement.
VERIFY
Check the organiser and whether the opportunity information is consistent.
UNDERSTAND
Know what is expected from you and what you are agreeing to.
QUESTION UNEXPECTED FEES
Don't assume a payment request is legitimate simply because it is attached to an opportunity.
PROTECT PERSONAL INFORMATION
Share only information reasonably needed for a legitimate application or arrangement.
An Audition Is One Step — Not the Whole Career.
Build your foundations.
Make your skill more reliable.
Produce evidence of your ability.
Choose suitable opportunities.
Do the work professionally.
Use the experience to strengthen your career.
Where Are You Going Next?
Your next answer depends on what you're missing.
